  1. You just described a Lab.
  2. Boston Terriers fit that but they are not a large breed...i suggest a Border Collie or a Shetland Sheepdog. My Grandmother owns a Shetland Sheepdog for her uncle that she cares for (hes cripple) and the puppy is learning to be a dog for the disabled for my grandmothers Uncle! They are good with kids and extremely smart. Also very loyal and can be protective but they are sometimes very shy dogs! Good luck
  3. german shepard
  4. Many of the breeds that were developed for guarding sheep and other livestock fit that description. Some of these breeds are komondor, kuvasz and great pyrenees.
  5. Any dog can be the dog you are describing. You just have to socialize it properly as a puppy and bring it around people all of the time so it will be used to different people and small children. All dogs are naturaly protective in their own home for the most part. If you love your dog and give them at least 20 minutes of constant petting a day it will be loyal to you no matter what! I have owned lots of dogs in my life and I have a german sheperd/ golden retriever mix right now that is the best dog I ever had! I definately will get another sheperd mix again. He is so smart. I recomend getting a puppy from a rescue or shelter it will appreciate you for saving it for the rest of it's life!
  6. You said exactly what a beagle is. My dog is like that. A beagle.
  7. Newfoundlands are loyal and are trained in their home country for water rescues. I had one that never left my side. Great Danes are gentle giants that do well with kids. My other recommendations are Boxers, German Shepherds or Pitbulls. Don't buy into the hysteria about Pits either. The dog can have a tendency toward agression but it won't show unless you raise it to be that way. I adopted a 6 yr old pit that plays with my 5 ferrets and has been picking up the training I've been teaching her quite quickly. 8. German Shepherds are great family dogs, they're friendly but do need to be well socialized with dogs and people of all ages. They are great with kids, my two year old nephew loves our shepherd! They are also great guard dogs. They are very smart so be sure to train them and give them things to do or they'll chew your house apart from boredom. Downsides: They do shed a lot! They eat a lot, so it's an expensive proposition when you're buying good food. They can be other dog aggressive so they needs lots of experiences with other dogs while they're still young. Couldn't recommend a better dog though! Be sure to get a pup who has stable parents, not nervous ones. Try to get one from hip certified parents as well as they are prone to hip dysplasia. Good luck!
