How many dog breeds are recognized by the AKC?
Hey, I just read that the ConKC recognizes 449 dog breeds, so I'd like to know for comparison. I don't need names, just a number. Thanks!

- I think its around 160.... not including the "foundation stock" of rare breeds. I'll see if I can find a source... Okay... Wikipedia (and we all know how reliable they are... about as reliable as dogbreedinfo.com LOL) says that the AKC recognizes 157 breeds, and 58 rare breeds in Foundation Stock.
- I want to say 166 to be exact...but not 100% sure. You really dont want a long list of names? Edit: 158...i lied! http://www.akc.org/press_center/facts_stats.cfm?page=why_purebred Tsk tsk sunshine...didn't you learn not to site wiki's! (I had a prof give me an F...haha). They added another breed since that was published :)
- www.akc.org has a complete list you can count.
- Hello Sunshine is correct. Meanwhile, worldwide, meaning recognized by REPUTABLE internationally accepted KC's, there are over 460 REAL breeds, not just cross-breds with cutesy, vomit-inducing 'names' to bilk uninformed buyers out of their cash, like -poos, -ugs, and -oodles.
- Over 449, probably around 789, if u go to akc.org u can find out
- ther are 158 breeds that are registered with akc http://www.akc.org/press_center/facts_stats.cfm?page=why_purebred
- ConKC 'recognizes' mutts not just breeds so it would be expected that they 'recognize' hundreds of names and will take money from anyone silly enough to think that getting their mutt 'registered' and it would mean anything except that they are silly enough to believe that! haha The AKC recognizes something like 120 or so I think - it varies because there are miscellaneous added occasionally and others that end up being dropped for lack of interest in perpetuating them. You can got to http://www.akc.org and it will tell you. Wonderful thing the internet :)
