- Size is pretty much the only difference between dog and cat collars. Cat collars are all small and lightweight for cats where as dog collars are usually bigger, thicker and stronger for dogs. I think a very small dog collar would be okay though, like the size for a chihuahua since their about the same as a cat collar.
- Well they have cat collars at Target by the cat food and toys. They even have harnesses (which are better for outdoor cats because they don't fall off as much and can't choke themselves with them.) Often cat collars look just like those for dogs and you have to search for the tiny print that says cat. Or, you could have been looking in the wrong aisle. Usually they are with the cat stuff, not the other collars. Good luck searching :)
- Misskat is quite wrong. Putting a small dog collar on a cat could cost it its life. Cats climb trees and get caught on branches. Dogs don't. You need a proper cat collar - some still have safety elastic but that can mean the collar gets wrapped round the cat's body. The modern cat collars with safety buckles (they simply pull apart of the tension on them is too high so the collar comes off completely) are far safer. Harnesses are for walking cats on leads, not for letting them out to climb trees!
- A harness.........for an out door cat............are you NUTS Marie???????? If a cat can get stuck in places wearing collars, they are absolutely doomed if they wear a HARNESS!!!!!!! I would check with a vet or pet store about the differences between the collars. The chemicals in the two collars may be different. (cats may have a lesser amount)
- Elizabeth shouldn't judge until she knows all of the facts. Who says that this cat is an outdoor cat? If she's not an outdoor cat, then 'getting the collar caught on branches' is not possible. I love it when people assume and tell other people that they are wrong when they don't even know the situation. Of course you would rather get a cat collar - she's a cat! They do make make cat collars - you can find them at any local pet store. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=cat%20collar&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi Whoa whoa whoa - miss kitty, did you just say the chemicals in the collars might be different? There are no chemicals in a cat/dog collar, if there were, they'd probably be toxic and unsafe. LOL
- You need to get a cat collar. Cat collars have elastic sections or a break away section that allows the cat to escape the collar should it get caught up in something. Dog collars do not have this. If a cat wearing a dog collar were to get the collar caught in something it may be trapped where it is or if suspended (ie in a tree) could hang itself. Neither a dog collar or a harness (as one poster suggested) is appropriate for day to day wear on any cat. Even indoor cats can get caught up on things when climbing making them dangerous even in that situation. For everyday wear it needs to be a cat collar, harnesses are for taking the cat out on leash only.
- Get a cat collar, there is a difference. Cat collars are elastic or the clip snaps off easily if they get caught up on something. Harnesses are for walking, 'cause cats are sneaky and can wiggle out of a collar.Hope this was brief and informative!
- If I were you, I would get a cat collar. My cats have the cat collars with the elastic thing so if they get caught, they can get free. The breakaway collar didn't work for my cat. She could take it off. This is what they look like: http://www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store.com/shop/shop_image/product/2e1f225ee07ca40cf29974556b9b0f25.jpg
