Dog Collars?
At the moment i have quite a thin leather collar on my bullmastiff pup, he is 6 month's old. While the collar is not tight it does seem to choke him a bit when he is on the lead or if i am leading him around in the house (like dragging him off the cats food!). Do you have any views of the thick wide dog collars? would that be better for him? Many thanks

- Have you considered one of those harness type things which go around the chest instead of the neck?
- get a body collar... I don't know what the real name is. but it goes like infront of his two front paws and then has a line that connects all the way to the front of his back paws. I have that for one of my dogs cause she likes to walk way ahead of me when I walk her and that way she doesn't get choked.
- use an everyday dog coller on him to keep the identity tag and so people know he is not stray but when you take him for walkes use a harness as this will not choke him and they cant pull as much with these on http://images.google.co.uk/images?gbv=2&svnum=10&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=harness&spell=1 enjoy him best of luck <33
- ask your vicar
- Get him a chain collar, they go slack when not being pulled on by the dog, and discourage the dog from taking YOU for a walk once he gets bigger.
- This is the type of collar you need for him, gives you plenty of control without choking him or digging into his neck. The body harness can affect his front movement if it doesn't fit properly.
- I usually Only put the dog collar when we go outside. Rusty Seams to like that.
- i would reccomend a wider collar for him so that if he were to lunge suddenly on the lead or pull for too long there is a lesser chance of damage to the wind pipe
- You need a wider collar on your dog, too narrow and it can break the vertebrae , i don't know mastiffs very well but a leather collar which is about 1.5 to 2 inches wide would be about correct, (please ask a vet or breed representative to be sure). And your boy should be on a harness for walks as they are prone to problems with the windpipe due to the immense pressure they put into pulling against a collar. - Chocotabbie, you are quite concerned about doing the right thing for your baby... and I think that's great! The best collar for training is the choke chain.... and it should never used to drag your pet while on lead, whether walking or during a training session. That said, I also advise you to NEVER leave it on when he plays with another dog, because of the danger of a leg getting poked inside of it and possible twisting, which could be fatal. Correcting your dog with the chain should consist of sharp hard jerk when necessary, always with a verbal command. Your dog will associate the command with the snap of the lead and you'll get him trained in no time. My personal experience with wide collars is that they are not suitable for Bullmastiffs, because you cannot maintain control of them. Same goes for the body harness... unless you are Superwoman!
- rogz collars are the best i have found but a harness is usually better for a dog that pulls
