Question about dog breeds before i get a dog?
I am thinking about getting a dog. There will be kids and 3 cats in the house. I want a breed that will be able to handle cats, and 7 year old kids. Sociable, nice, loving, etc. What kind of dog breeds would be best for this kind of household? And any other information that you would like to give me please tell. BTW, we had a schnauzer a few years back. She died of old age at 14.

- why don't you check out your local shelter? www.petfinder.com
- A mutt sounds perfect for you. I suggest a lab mix; they are energetic and trainable. Shelters are full of them. If you adopt, you'll not only be getting an awesome family pet, but you'll be saving a life too. Add: I definitely suggest a medium to large dog though, whatever you choose to get. They can handle the rough play from young children.
- Get a lab. They may be big, but they are so gentle, loving, caring, and protective!
- Research the right breed for your family as far as space, exercise requirement, grooming etc. There are literally hundreds of breeds and mixes that would be great if properly trained, socialized and supervised
- Well, a bull terrier is perfect with children, but I don't know if they are ok with cats. A boston terrier is fine with cats and kids, but they are small. Would you like a small or large dog?
- Dachshunds? they love people and get along with other pets. But they can be stubborn!
- one of the best is a Golden retriever.I have had Golden Retrievers for the past 20 or so years.Never had a problem them. They get along with my cats just fine as well as my three sons, and let my sons do just about anything to him.Just make sure its a puppy though. As They are the eastest and one of the smartest to train.
- Labs and Golden Retrievers are really the best family dogs. But that all completely depends on the specific dog's personality. You can't always generalize breeds.
- - Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - Australian Cattle Dog (Heeler) - Golden Retriever - Basset Hound - Boxer - Dalmatian - German Shepherd - Collie
- Did you like your Schnauzer as a family pet? If so get another one. The right breed is one that can fit into your family and life style. If everyone is always running here and there and there is seldom anyone home then it may not be the time for another dog. Any age dog will need a lot of attention for the first six months you have it, Until it feels at home and you have learned to read its behavior and needs (like how does it let you know when it needs to go out) someone will need to be around most of the day. If you can't provide that then a cage pet or a cat which will be less lonely all day when everyone is gone is a better choice../
- Shih-Tzus are cute and lovable. they're the ones with smushed noses. these dogs can handle kids younger than 7. I have had personal experience with these dogs. Bichon Frises are hard to potty train but they're very smart and fast runners. I have a Bichon Frise. hope this helps.
- Hands down winner is the Labrador Retriever!!! Great with all people, especially kids. Get along with other animals. Very sociable, nice, loving, loyal and easy to train. Make sure you choose a reputable breeder that does OFA and CERF certs on the parents and offers a minimum 26 month hip/eye guarantee. You will want to make sure he is from good lines even though he's only going to be a pet. This will ensure you are actually choosing a good breeder that is striving to only breed quality Labs.
