What are some hypoallergenic dog breeds?

Preferably large dog breeds but it doesn't matter!! Ok you don't have to critique me on what they are called. You should get the point that I am looking for a breed that doesn't shed a lot. I am asking a question for you to help me not for you to tell me that I called it something wrong. Sorry to the people who know what I mean and actually answer my question I really appreciate it

  1. Labradoodle, they are adorable!
  2. There are none, all dogs shed so no dog is hypoallergenic. Some shed less then others so they don't trigger allergies. All dogs have dander and thats what people are allergic to for the most part. It is rarer but there are some allergic to hair not dander so a hairless breed is the dog of choice. But no dog even hairless are hypoallergenic. Note: Just mixing a dog with a poodle doesnt mean it won't shed, poodles shed just not as much and since its hair they shed their dander is a little different so its not likely to trigger allergies as much. It is a common misconception that mixing a golden with a poodle makes a perfect dog for people with allergies but the thing is that the golden and labs both shed like crazy so those can pass on. Edit- If you want a dog that you will know won't shed much then a mix is not the dog you want to go with. Poodles (not poodle mixes) PWD's shih tzu's Yorkies
  3. There is really no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. There are dogs that have hair instead of fur, some that don't shed (or shed very little) etc. Ultimately, people tend to be allergic to dander which is present in saliva. All dogs have it. Having a dog with hair or one that sheds less will just mean you will suffer less allergic reactions, but the dander is always there.
  4. No dog is truly hypoallergenic. There are some breeds which are low shedding or produce less dander...and those *sometimes* work for people with allergies. Here is the AKC list of such breeds: http://www.akc.org/about/faq_allergies.cfm
  5. There's no such thing as hypoallergenic dogs. Any breeder that tells you otherwise is only in it for the money. There are breeds that shed less, but most of the allergies that are aggravated by animals come from dander and the proteins located in their saliva. Vislas, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and Standard Poodles are a few dogs that are fairly clean. Look for rescues in your area that deal with those breeds.
  6. I hear that there are only 15. Here is a list of ones that I know about. Poodle- both the small and the standard. These are said to be non shedding dogs. They do require extensive grooming though. Schnauzer- standard, mini, and giant. These do need clipped about 2 times a year. Portugese water dogs- I don't know alot about these and I don't think I have ever even seen one. Wheaten Terriers- These are the ones I highly recommend. they are very friendly and sweet Irish water spaniel Kerry blue terriers Chinese Crested-these are really neat dogs. They are mainly hairless. Mexican hairless Bischons Yorkies and Shit zus
  7. Any dog with a single coat like: Maltese, Havanese, Yorkshire Terrier, Bichon frise, Coton du tulear, wheaten terrier, Schnauzer, norfolk terrier, silky terrier, shitzu, westhighland terrier, poodles, and many more Wheaten terrier and standard poodles are the main ones that are large breed However, please be cautioned that all dog are not 100% hypoallergenic. There are other factors besides from dander like their saliva can cause an allergic reaction. I would suggest finding a way to spend a couple hours with the breed of dog alone. Many shelters don't mind helping you out or find a friend who does have the dog. You can also ask a breeder if you can play with a puppy's mother too. Wishing you best of luck with your new dog!
  8. I would be careful when buying a labradoodle or goldendoodle. some of these tend to shed. They were first breed to make dogs that were more friendly towards people with allergies, this didnt work that well. Maybe later on after the lines get strong(like a long time) they will be this way. remember all dogs were mutts at one point. I am a huge fan of the standard poodle but my idea is rather one sided. I own one.
  9. No dog is hypoallergenic. But Standard poodles would be best if you have allergies and want a large dog, they have wool instead of fur. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poodle
  10. Poodle they come in different sizes and any solid color but i have seen some that have two to three colors, they don't shed but you have to groom them often ok now don't buy "Designer breed" like someone suggested they are mixed so they are mutts please buy from responsible breeder
  11. Of course there are poodles, but if you're like me, you think they are hideous. A really good choice would be a Native American Indian Dog. Or there's the Labradoodle.
  12. shih tzu's They are great!!!
