Ideal dog breeds to keep with cats and rabbits?

I have two cats and two rabbits and want to get a dog. It's not so much the cats I am worried about, but the rabbits. Does anyone have any suggestions or dog breeds that would be okay/be able to be trained? Thanks a lot! Oh and also no one is home during the weekdays from about 9-4. Any advice on this?

  1. Well we have had cats forever and got a German Shepard (shes about 90lbs) got along great with the cats after they got over another animal in the house. Then we got a chihuahua (shes about 5 pounds) and the 2 dogs are best friends.. its really stupid to watch them play but all 5 of our animals (3 cats, 2 dogs of all sizes) get along now. Best to get whatever dog you are gunna get when its a puppy so the animals are a similar size. Other then that you just have to make sure you tell the dog firmly or give it a good scruff grab when it miss behaves, it will learn.
  2. I have a cat and 2 dogs. The dogs are a choodle (chihuahua poodle) and a chihuahua. All three can drive me nuts chasing around the place. Since I'm in an apartment, I've had small dogs the past few years, but even when I had a big dog, it got along with rabbits. Go here and you will see lots of pet interaction: http://daedelys.com/page3.html I know a lot of people hate chihuahuas because they can be such sissy dogs ( I know I still hate ones like that ), but mine has an outgoing personality and I can't keep him away from strangers and other dogs. He acts like a lab I used to have in a little body!
  3. A Japanese Chin, they get along with anything! We have the meanest cat in the whole entire world and she gets along with my Japanese Chin! :)
  4. Your rabbits should be somewhere protected like in a cage or a hutch or some enclosed area if youplan on having a dog. It really depends. I have a six year old labrador and it took years to train it but he totally ignores the rabbits and doesn't even try to get close to the cages. Maybe he is just old.. But, any kind of dog I think would probably react to rabbits sometime or another since for them it's like a prey...you should be careful since it could hurt your rabbits, or even your cats. I got my dog after I had my cats and they would try to scratch at him and go wild when he was a puppy until they got used to him, so you also have to consider that your cats may not be accostumed to dogs and may attack it.
