What brand of dog food would you recommend to change to?
My 5 year old dog just came home from the vet with a yeast infection in her ears. The vet has suggested that we change her food and treats to help clear up the infection. She recommended that we change to food with rice, chicken, veggies or fish. Was looking for brands that others have tired? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Wellness has a great chicken formula and a fish formula. My dog loves the chicken formula. But all of them are great! http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/dog_wellness_dry_index.html
- We use and love Innova. http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/
- Try Iams. Make sure when switching food you use half of the food she has been eating mixed with half of the new food at first or you can give them diarrhea.
- In my opinion, dog food is mank. I don't use it. We cook our dog chicken breast and stuff.
- We recommend anything that has meat (not a meat meal, or by product) as the first ingredient. We also prefer to feed a dry food over strictly wet food. We would NEVER recommend a semi-moist food, as there are WAY too many chemicals needed to make the food stable enough to be semi-moist. Corn is not digested by dogs very well and it is often used as a "filler" and can lead to loose stool, and cause allergies in dogs.
- nutro max lamb formula in the dark green bag!
- A couple of really good foods I would suggest would be Nature's Variety Instinct or Nature's Logic foods, they both have a wide range of probiotics that will help boost the immune system and can help fight off another infection. I've tried the Instinct and had excellent results with my two dogs (one who was just getting treated for yeasty ears). If you can't afford that then a couple of pretty good foods I've had success with and are reasonably cost-effecient would be Natural Balance Ultra Premium Formula, or Taste of the Wild.
- Eagle Pack Holistic Lamb and Rice.
- I just want to clear something up. "Meal" is perfectly acceptable. As long as the meat is specified like "Chicken Meal", it's fine and dandy. "By-Product" is not acceptable. I personally like Natural Balance and Nature's Variety. NB has several limited ingredient diets that may work for you. No fillers, no cheap ingredients, no common allergens (like corn). All human grade. http://naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas/allergy.html I use the Venison Nature's Variety raw medallions. Awesome. They also come in rabbit, chicken, beef, and lamb. http://www.naturesvariety.com/ It all comes down to whatever is easy for you to get and what works with your dog. Most everyone has mentioned great foods like Wellness, Eagle Pack, etc. I also know that Canidae has a new Salmon food that may be worth looking at. GL!
- I would suggest Wellness with fish... check out http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com
- I'd recommend Pure Woof Gold, available at www.petlane.com, Wellness, Eagle Pack Holistic, or Blue Buffalo. You can home cook your food, but do your research so your dog gets all the nutrients it needs. Dogs' needs are different than ours. Contrary to another post, "meal", such as chicken meal, is actually a superior protein source to just chicken. The meal has had the water removed, so it is more protein in less weight. Do avoid corn, brewers rice, cellulose, by-products or "digest". Whole grains are better than processed or fragments of grains. Be sure the species is listed, as well. For example, chicken, not poultry, or salmon oil, not fish oil.
- i feed and recommend Black Gold Dog food it has helped my girls alot there coats have cleared up and they love the lamb and rice formula they also have many other varieties i love this brand would never go back to anything else.
- Everyone has its own opinion on which dog food is the best; however, I think that raw is the best option out of all. I think that you should do your own research and pick out which food. I would be scornful if someone suggested me to feed something else. It's better if you make your own decision rather than listen to what someone has to say. Please stay away from big commercial dog foods include iams, purina, hills, etc. You want to be aware of pet food recalled include the Timberwolf Organics All list of recalled pet food can be found here http://leerburg.com/dogfoodrecall.htm
- Well you have a lot of suggestions, but personally, the higher quality you go, the more chance your dog will have of getting rid of the ear infection. To start: vets and nutrition typically do not mix. Just look at the food in most vets offices(ingredients) sell. So far your vet seems honest, but I would still walk on the side of caution, I continue to do that even though my vet recommended a pet boutique where we found innova, but she could've told us the pro plan in her office. You want to look for brown rice if you are going to feed a kibble with rice. Innova is a good example of a high quality dog food and I had success using it for a year or so until I switched my three to raw feeding. If you can afford it, look into Wellness core Ocean vaiety Taste of the wild Solid gold barking at the moon Evo Innova Orijen
- We use Nutrisource http://www.nutrisourcedogfood.com/ It is very reasonably priced for its ingredients also it has glucosamine which helps with joints since your dog is 5years old. We feed this to our catahoula leopard puppy and our 6 year old english pointer who tends to have allergies
- My dogs haven't had a single ear infection since switching to California Naturals-any of the foods made by Natura are excellent.
- I recommend you to use Agritura's Canned Dog-Food Products. These products are best- nutrition Rated..!! Here is the best food products for all types of dog's. For more Details check it here-------------------Agritura.com
- In general, any food your dog likes that is high quality should be fine. Buy high-quality and avoid foods with any kind of by-product, and avoid those with fillers, especially corn. Go to your local pet-food specialty store, and ask for their recommendations. Take the time to read the ingredients. Ask also if they have any trial-size or sample bags of the foods that you are interested in buying; you really don't want to spend $35 or more on a huge bag of dog food and find out that your dog doesn't like it. Spending a couple dollars on a small bag allows you to see if your dog will like it. My dog likes Nature's Menu's dry kibble food, "Chicken, Ocean Whitefish and Sweet Potato" flavor, but the best food in the world won't help if your dog refuses to eat it. There are a lot of high quality foods out there, and you will find that many people have their own personal favorite. You'll need to take the time to find which food your dog likes best that fits in your budget. If your dog has floppy (down) ears, be sure to stay on top of keeping them clean and dry, even after the infection has passed. Good luck! - Nutro Herring Meal Nutro Venison Wellness White fish Your dr might have put him on a prescription food. But that would be Royal Canin or Science Diet (which as prescription are good) but their store sold products are mediocre (SD isn't good at all!)
