What is a good, nonagressive, small pet dog that doesn't have to be exercised and entertained to be enjoyable?
This dog would be taken on walks, but would be inside more of the time than outside. I am over 60, and would like to have a loveable dog that would enjoy other people, as well. I love pets!

- a small dog as a poodle would do good for older people or a mutt that you get a shelter would be best of all!
- a boston Terror, but they r hard to find.
- pugs are easy to look after.calm.friendly.
- Well, I have a miniature dachshund that I adopted at 4 years old. She goes out to potty about 4 times a day, other than that she just likes to cuddle under blankets on the couch or in my lap :-) She doesn't run a lot either, just goes potty, comes right back in and sleeps ;-) Don't know if that's typical of the breed, but I know mine's lazy! Love her!
- stuffed animal in that case... all dogs need exercising and entertainment otherwise its boring for them. Fence your yard, and sit in a chair and throw a ball. NOT hard work, get a treadmill and teach the dog to run on that. But walk need to be every day and not just around the block. I would suggest these breeds and mixes. Pekingnese Pug Basset Hound Clumber Spaniel English Toy Spaniel These are not the MOST active dogs but they are still moderately active and need exercise daily.
- Definately a King Charles Spaniel - they are small, beautiful dogs that are incredibly sweet, and ideal for apartment life, since they don't need to be walked often, nor do they mind being inside a large amount of the time. My neighbor has one, and they are gentle and docile. Sounds like just the dog you need! :)
- Get an older dog from a shelter.
- get a robot dog. sounds perfect for you. any dog is going to need daily excersise and require running
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or a Clumber Spaniel. You could go through a rescue for these breeds and find one that is older to find one that has gone through it's "puppy stage"-which means less exercise and less active (usually). Plus, the rescue can give you a fairly thorough evaluation of the dog's temperament and energy level. :)
- I think the perception that small dogs need less walking/are easy to control is misguided. It may be that a dog isn't the pet for you. I don't mean to dampen your dream, but I have several old clients who have little tiny poodles who nearly pull them over and I worry they are going to fall and break a hip.
- Non aggressive and small? I would probably say a pekingese. And if you will be living alone with no other pets around, please opt for a male.they have less behavioral problems. Neuter your male. But there is no "real " aggressiveness in dogs unless you don't train them correctly. Any dog can be sweet, but some other dogs are prone to aggressiveness (based on dogs that aren't taught good behavioral skills, some dogs do better in the temperamnt department. Chihuahas dont' fare too well.)
- beagle they are very calm if adutls. i have an akc beagle pup and she is crazy
- I have heard from everyone who has rescued a Greyhound from Greyhound rescue that they are great dogs and couch potatoes. My small dogs (Westies) need a lot of exercise, most Terriers do. While Yorkies are small they also need exercise. I've had Welsh Corgis (smaller dogs) and they need exercising too. If you got an older, small dog from an animal shelter it would probably fit your needs rather than a young dog. Good Luck.
- Well, every dog has to be exercised and entertained. Some breeds just vary on how much. These breeds have low energy levels, and I've included photos. - DOG'S ARE GREAT FRIENDS, YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT HOW YOU RAISE THIS DOG WILL HELP ITS BEHAVIOR. BUT DOG'S ARE LIKE US SOME ARE- GLAD ,MAD ,BAD , SWEET . I LOVE DACHSHUNDS
- I have a schauzer miniature poodle mix and he is perfect. He is VERY lovable and craves being cuddled and ffollowing you around the house. Sometimes he'll be in a playing mood where you just like throw a bone but thats pretty much other then walking him like 3 times a day for like 5 mins. On the ther hand he enjoys running around with our other dog outside, but I'm pretty sure thats just because we have another dog. He's about 1 1/2 feet high and is a great companion. (but maybe this is just him...)
- There are plenty of small breeds that would meet your needs. My 96 yr old great aunt has a chihuahua to keep her company. They are quite the pair. If you aren't up for potty training, I'd suggest an older dog, perhaps from the local humane society, or perhaps you could find a breeder in your area that has a dog they are ready to spay/neuter and retire to a good home. Many breeders of small dogs keep them in the house with them as part of the family. Good breeds that might fit your needs: chihuahua, maltese, shih tzu, pekingnese. Look for any small breed that's original purpose was companionship.
- Hi. I think there's a lot of smaller dogs that would suit your needs. However, one suggestion: I do think you're better off getting an adult at least a few years old, especially if you haven't had a dog in a long time. I got an adorable 7 month old maltese recently and, while he's just a bundle of joy, I must admit I wasn't quite prepared for how much care and time he takes! The problem isn't exercise - it's that if I don't take time to entertain him, he WILL entertain himself and that often involves a mad dash across the room to remove some idiot object from his mouth. This morning it was my ATM cash withdrawal...omg! What I would suggest if I were you is that, rather than focus on one breed, go to petfinder and plug in your zip code along with dog size=small. Start looking and focus on rescue groups. You'll find a lot of dogs and then you'll get not only a good description of the dog's character and energy, you'll get a dog that has been medically screened. It's worth every penny! But for you, I don't breed is as important as temperament and age. Good luck!
- I would get a West Highland Terrier, if you ever saw Hamish McBeth on BBC/ABC tv, "Jock" was just gorgeous. Great looking dog. And I'm into more medium sized dogs, like Border Collies and Beagles. But if I was to get a little dog I would get one of those.
