  1. DO NOT buy a puppy from a pet shop - you're letting yourself in for heartbreak and huge vet bills. Their stock comes from puppy mills!!! Check ads in you local papers, check shelters there's always hundreds and hundreds of dogs available in a city the size of Boston.
  2. I agree with the previous user. The classifieds have list of the type of dog, usually for how much, and a contact phone number. If you're looking for a purebred, make sure you ask the breeder a bunch fo questions pertaining to the breed you are interested in. It's very important to research the type of dog you want, their temperments, and health problems. You can get this information from any pet section of, say, Borders.
  3. did you look in the yellow pages under pet stores???? if they have one it should be listed.
  4. Have you considered adopting from a shelter? Shelter often have a lot of puppies and if don't want to potty train they even have older dogs. I have had really great luck with shelters and the animal rescue groups and have some great pets now. Look up the Humane Society or some other rescue group, they are always looking for good owners. There are lots of homeless puppies and other animals that need homes so that they will not be killed, why look for one to buy? I also agree with the first poster. Good luck finding a a good match. Make sure to spend some time with the doggie before you take them home so that you can see if you are compatible, also if you have other pets already think about introducing them and trying to make a smooth transition for everyone so that you don't end up with fighting and the possibility of having to give one of them up.
  5. go to petfinder.com.....this is a site for rescue groups.....just enter your Zip code, and be AMAZED at how many great choices you have !!.....i adopted a Great Pyrenees mix from them, and my dog Sylvester is awesome !!.....check it out.....try it.....do a good deed.....adopt a dog today !!!.....good luck to you, in your search for a dog as a new pet !!!!.....you will be very pleased, at all the wonderfull choices you have at petfinder.com !!!
  6. NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store! They are from Puppy mills, which are big amish breeding farms! The dogs are taken from their mother WAY TO EARLY, undersocialized, and VERY sick! Go to www.petfinder.org!!!
  7. NO NO NO NO Do NOT ever buy out of pet store. The puppies are from puppy mills - breeding stock kept in terrible conditions, no medical care, poor genetic backgrounds, puppies with serious hereditary health problems and current illnesses.... for which they charge you as much or more than a reputable responsible breeder who shows their dogs and does all the health checks and exams for hereditary conditions. Go here: http://www.akc.org/breeds/index.cfm?nav_area=breeds FInd a breed in which you are interested by reading about the different breeds. On the AKC web page for each specific breed are links - in the left hand column. Click on the link that says "Breed Club" (there is a seperate club for each breed - they are called the "parent club" and set the conformation standard for the breeed, promote their breed etc. On each club's website, you will find a contact list for breeders who are club members and abide by a breeder's Code of Conduct. Since the club's are national, they can put you in touch with breeder in your area. These breeders take great care to produce healthy puppies from genetically sound parents. Now, even breeding two Westminster champions together will produce a litter with some puppies being show prospects and some being pet puppies; which are priced accordingly. A reputable breeder will be able to tell you all about the dogs in their bloodlines, have at least 3-4 health checks done on their dogs, stand behind their puppies with a guarantee about hereditary health problems, require that if you ever can't keep the dog then it goes back to them and many other things. Also, on each breed club's page, there will be a link to breed rescue where they have taken charge of placing dogs in their breed who need rehomed. They are very careful to match the dog to the home. Do not dismiss going to your local shelter. Consider an adult dog either from a breed rescue or a shelter. They are wonderful companions and you don't have to go through the puppy housebreaking and chewing everything up. Puppies are cute but that only lasts a few months and then they are dogs.
  8. Never buy a puppy from a pet store! If you need any tips in selecting a puppy from a litter - http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/choosing-a-puppy.html A shelter is worth consideration also.
  9. Get one from a shelter, or if you have to have a purebred, a reputable breeder. Don't buy one from a pet store. I'm a vet tech and we roll our eyes at people that do, 9 times out of 10 they have pneumonia and that will end up costing you another 1-2k in hospital stays. Plus whatever one else said about puppy mills
