How do I make my pet dog to go into his kennel?

I have a pet dog which refuse to go into his dog house. I even put his meal in the kennel he still refuses. When It's rainning, he still refuses to go inside his dog house. What should I do?

  1. did you try treats? a kong filled with peanut butter works great, plus gives them something to do while in there.
  2. well y don't u let him sleep in the house. and you should put some doggy toys in there and make it really cozy and try to have it close to the house as possible because dogs like to be with their family.
  3. Pick him up and put him in there if you can, if not I'm not really sure...I'm sorry this didn't really help! We taught our dog by saying "go lay down" Now, every time we say that, he goes to his kennel..
  4. He will go in when he gets hungry, wet or cold enough.
  5. try putting treats in the kennel.
  6. well if its really small then he probly wont go in there. Maybe he wants some cushon in there. put like a little snack in there and then he'll go... i think
  7. i used to drag my dog by the collar but everytime i did it i would clap my hands twice and point to the cage its been about a year and when i clap my hangs and point she will run right into her cage and i dont have problems. give them time, they learn like a little kid
  8. Making him feel comfortable in the dog house is very important. Dogs have the natural instinct to have a den (your dog house). The den should be a safe and secure spot. Using toys and food is good. Praising him when he goes in the dog house is also very important. Make sure the dog house is big enough that your dog can fit comfortably with his food/water, but not too much excess space.
  9. You might have a dog that honestly needs companionship and knows that oif they retreat to their kennel they are kissing that goodbye. Maybe you could crate them inside and try that? We use a crate and did word association by saying "night night" every time we put him in there. Now if we say "night night" he just goes in willingly.
  10. We had the same problem, 2 years later she still will sit in the rain if tied up rather than go in her house, we tried everything..treats, blankets, toys, my son even crawled in there with her. Our last resort is to try to build a bigger house. good luck
  11. some dogs are just not dog house dogs. one of my current dogs will go into his crate without being told, but he hates the dog house. My other dog loves the dog house tho. If you really want to train him - put him inside when he tries to come out say no! When he can wait lets say 5 seconds inside without the urge to come out, say good boy and give him a small treat - repeat the exercise and extend the length of time he has to stay in there. I have a very hyperactive corgi at home - he has a sit stay carpet near the door. He started of 2 minutes sitting and staying by himself, he can now stay there for an hour - not moving away unless being told to. Remember when training - consistency is the key - don't let the dog have his way - it will confuse them - such as awww he's scared of the doggy house, he doesn't like it, it's ok, then he'll learn that next time i'll try harder to get out and they'll let me back out.
  12. Have you tried giving him dog treats for going in without giving you a fuss about it? I have found dog treats very useful in training pets. However some dogs like humans can be very hard headed. Make sure you tell him.her good dog when going in the kennel, show him/her some affection for doing right. That way he/she knows they are doing a good job. Dogs are like kids in a lot of ways. If the dog goes in the kennel, and no love is given. The dog might not know it is doing good. Try treats, love and affection for doing right. Trust me it gets you a lot further than punishing the dog for doing wrong. You don't want your dog to turn on you for being or feeling abused. The last thing you need is an out of control dog. Also you could try training him to go in the kennel on a leash for a short time. He/she will eventually get the hint and go in on his/her own. Still even when on the leash you should give the dog a treat or something for going in if he/she don't fight or pull the other way. Try any of the suggestions and see if they work. This is how we house broke our pit-bull when he went out and came back in without a fight he got a treat--within a month he was going out doing his business, coming back in, and waiting for his treat.
  13. Get a new dog! lol No really - I was just wondering who is the dog and who is the master? U must B firm. The old rolled up newspaper 2 the nose (they have sensitive noses) and repeating the command while leading him by his collar 2 the kennel - making sure 2 get him in and then praise him with a treat each time should do the trick. Dogs R like kids they will test U. But there is one thing that may hinder him - he could B apprehensive or scared of confined spaces. Is the kennel large enough so that he doesn't feel claustrophobic. Is it an open chain link type of dog run kennel or enclosed. Also have U had him since he was a pup and U know whether or not he was confined B4. If all else fails try throwing in a cat! Good Luck.
  14. It is a hard thing to teach the dog. Some dogs won't eat where they sleep and don't want to go to the bathroom where they sleep. Is the dog used to being indoors? You say kennel and to me that implies having a fenced in area too. Is this the case? If not, I would put a pen around the dog house with a gate that can lock and high enough to where the dog can't climb out. Place a tarp or make a roof over the grassy part. If the dog still won't eat.....you definitely will have to figure out where the dog will eat so it doesn't starve. Can the dog come inside to eat? Instead of regular food, but only a little while, try luring the dog with a treat or possibly you could even go into the dog house to just entice the dog in. Let the dog know it's a safe place for you too! Put toys in there and a favorite "blankie" and give the dog attention each time the dog has to go to the kennel or dog house. Many dogs just don't like being alone no matter where you put them. Ask the pet store for ideas and have a nice warm bed in there that hopefully won't be chewed up , and ask your vet for more suggestions. Good luck.
