Why do only Pit Bull owners buy dog collars with spikes?

I've never seen a poodle, lab, or collie with a spiked collar, but I see lots of Pits with them. Pit Bull owners are quick to defend what nice dogs they are, but it makes me wonder what the rationale behind the spiked collar is. Is it the owner trying to increase the dangerous look of his/her pet, or does the pet get in a lot of fights and need neck protection? Either way, either the dog or the owner - or both - are psycho. So, what's with the spiked collars?

  1. Yes they are trying to make their dog look dangerous. I own a pure bred pit, and she is the sweetest thing. She might just lick you to death if you give her the chance. And for the record, I don't have a spiked collar on here. I would though if I was in a creepy neighbor hood, or wanted to scare someone away. Same thing goes for my German Shepard Rottie that I have.
  2. Guys with small you-know-what's (as well as insecure people) get pit bulls, so of course they're trying to make them look as tough as possible to cover up their own insecurity. It's the same theory as big trucks
  3. probably just to make the doog look tough...even though alot of other dogs wear spiked collars like rotti's. and i wouldent call the dog psyco because its not their fault to choose wut their owners put on them...also i seen alot of pitbulls without the spikes
  4. idk.but those dogs r not the nicest at all..do u kno how many cases they have been in with attackin ppl.and even killin babies....but i have seen a chiwawa(dont kno if i spelled it right) wit a spiked collar
  5. I have saw them on English Bulls and on Doberman Pincers. THEY do look good on a sleek healthy dogs coat,,,, Where I live Scumbags!! fight their Pit Bulls.... IS AWFUL how they treat the dogs.. IF ONLY the poor dogs would just turn on the jerks and KILL THEM--bet it would stop...as they are all Cowards and lower than a snakes belly!!
  6. Not true! Some people wear spiked collars, although they may be considered psycho also and they usually buy the spiked bracelets to go with the ensemble.
  7. They just look cool, but for people like you and me whom don't feel a need to prop up our ego's owning a pitbull just seems crazy
  8. The poodle next door wears a spiked collar his name is spike. I have seen boxers great Danes, saint bernards, cocker spaniel.pomerarians, kerry blues and chihuahua with spikes. My pit bull wears a hot pink collar. My last dog a 8lb poodle x wore a black spiked collar. It as to do with what people like. A lot of pits wear what is known as a punch collar when being trained for greater control. They are after all very strong and us good owners keep control so stupid people wont try to hurt our pets. Again my pit had to go to the vet because the dangerous kid next door hit him with a bat and cut open his head. and the only thing my baby did was be outside in his own backyard. For the girl who asked how many pit attacks, last year 10 with 3 fatal. More kids were killed by their parents, around 2000. Stop letting the Media think for you and take a look at what is happening. There are people who want to ban more than pit bulls they want to make it where there are no dogs over 30lbs allowed. Stop giving up freedom
  9. I always thought the spike collars were for large dogs that couldn't protect themselves from dangerous predators like yorkies and miniature pinschers. Or possibly to make up for the owners insecurity.
  10. To try and show power it is sickening. Let me tell you something. Dogs are tried to be mean. The owner is what makes a dog. I have a sister to my best friend's dog. My dog is sweet ,and will lay with a cat.She is a pit bull. My friend's dog would tear that same cat up.Why is that you might ask? Because I took my dog out to dog parks, made her live with cats and I took the time out that was needed to show my dog to be nice.To make a long story short The owner is the one responsible to the dog.
  11. They are trying to make the dog look cool, thats all. My friend has a Newfie and she wears a spiked collar...lol I think it just looks neat but wouldnt put one on my dog I like utilitarian look something that is durable, easy to undo and has a colour to match the dogs coat. Most spiked collars are made of leather which I find to be less durable than Nylon collars otherwise I woul like a spiked collar because it looks neat, my dog isnt a pitty though. I know my friends dog was an American Bulldog and he just looked silly with a thin nylon collar on he looked much more distinguished with his 2 inch wide studded (not spiked) collar. I might add that he never fought with other dogs and ws very sociable. The only reason for the collar was that it suited him and looked good on him. I know some people just do it because they think its cool and say that the collars is there for fights but they are the idiots of the dog owner world and it shouldnt be assumed that all people put spiked collars on thier dogs to make them look tougher or increase thier own image vicariously. Not all dogs wearing spiked collars are pittys, but an inordinate number of them do because they got the breed in the first place to make themselves look tough and want to enhance the image further.
  12. Someone trying to be macho. When you see a spiked collar on a large breed of dog, it's usually the owner, not the dog, you need to watch out for. Unless it's part of a pet costume contest and it's wearing a leather outfit with it.
  13. It is for image or effect mostly, however it can protect the dog's neck in a fight legal or otherwise. I own a red nose pit bull and i don't use a spiked collar. Her name is Baby and over the years we have chased bad guys in the rain together and she has always protected the children from all comers 4 legs or two. At 14 years today, she plays with other kids and grown ups a like. The dog often gets the blame for the owners screw ups. Anything with teeth will bite. I have bitten a few people myself. Please don't give into fear, get the facts. A dog is a dog unless humans teach them to be something else. Small dogs attack people also German Sheppards and Russian Wolfhounds were used as war dogs. The media needs to sell papers and viewership. Nothing does that better than drama(human or animal). People train chickens to fight, yet no one ever says those chickens will attack you. Please don't encourage the hate and fear in the world. Treat pit bull so called attacks and attacks on a case by case basis. Peace.
  14. I think that the reason most of the time is that the owner just wants their pit to look cool or bad. But I've had a Chihuahua/weiner mix and I got him a little spike collar for Christmas and he looked cute in it so it's all up to the owner's tastes, I guess.
  15. They buy dog collars with spikes for the same reason they buy Pit Bulls. They want to look tough. (In other words they're scared and they want people to be scared of their dog!)
  16. some people are trying to make their dog look tough i guess. i think spike collars look good on male dogs. it makes them look more "manly" hahahaha...i have a male chihuahua, i think a spike collar looks cute on him. one time i went online and trying to find spike collar for him but i never got it for him though. it really depends on what the owner is thinking.
  17. oh yeah, the dog and the owner are psycho. where do you people get this stupid stuff. the collar is all about looks. people already think pits are the meanest dogs on earth, even though the little ankle biters are more likely to attack then a pit. i have two pits. i have pinch collars for them, to train them. i would nt put a spike collar on them because they serve no purpose. but if people want to, more power to them.
