Can cats use dog flea collars?

I was just recently given some dog flea collars and I was wondering if my cats could use them? I have no clue if it would be harmful at all. Thanks.

  1. They would be too big for the kitty cats :0)
  2. NO NO NO !!! Anyway, flea collars are a waste of money....all they do is keep the fleas away from the neck area. Use Frontline or Advanage from your vet xx
  3. The chemicals might be too harsh for the cats, and can develop skin irritations or other bad reactions, even fatality. Cats and dog flea products are specifically made for their species, their are even products specifically made for certain age ranges. "No! Ingredients in many flea products labeled for dogs can be harmful or fatal to your cat. An example of this is the ingredient permethrin. Products containing permethrin, or any product labeled "for dogs only" should NEVER be used on cats. Cats have a very sensitive metabolism, and using these products on cats or even allowing your cat close contact with a dog that has been recently treated can have disastrous consequences. Many other flea and tick product options are available for cats. " http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?aid=318#answer_9
  4. No. The amounts of the stuff they use is different, so it would be toxic for kitty. Get a cat flea collar, some of them work well, since some of the liquids like Frontline have been discounted as good, since they cause reactions sometimes.
  5. i dont think so!!
  6. The only good use for flea collars is to cut them up and put them in your vacuum cleaner bags - they kill flea eggs! Flea collars generally only serve to irritate your cat's neck, and can be very toxic to them. And never use a product intended for dogs on cats - some chemicals that are safe for dogs can be lethal to cats.
