What could cause a dog to vomit up solid food?

My dog has been acting lethargic and occasionally vomiting up her dog food all day. I only gave her a small amount of food after she threw up the first time. Every time she vomits her food comes up completely solid. She has thrown up about 7 times since this this morning. Now tonight she is drooling a little bit. I'm taking her to the vet in the morning, there were none open today. I'm just worried what this could be. Does anyone know what is wrong with her?

  1. I'm not sure - look in your phone book for a 24 hour animal hospital - they should give you some info over the phone or at least let you speak with the vet.
  2. parvo or allergies? :( to rule out allergies, have you changed dog food recently? to rule out parvo, does your dog have all his parvo shots up to date? and boosters if he's an older dog? if you notice blood in his stool thats a for sure sign of parvo x.x; otherwise it could be another illness, but lethargy and vomit are 2 symptoms of it >.<; parvo is very serious and can kill a dog.. *best wishes*
  3. If she has been throwing up that much today, I would really try to find an emergency vet. She could get dehydrated (especially if it's a small dog), or if it's an obstruction, she could die before tomorrow.
  4. Look around for a missing sock, toy, ball, watch. It may be a blockage. Also, was she left outside at all? Do you live in an area where they spray insecticides or fertalizier? I wouldn't wait to take her to the vet, large breed dogs can have a stomach turn over on them. Depending on where you live, you should be able to find an emergency vet. Good luck. I hope she feels better.
  5. does her belly or abdomen look bloated or extended? she could have a "twisted stomach". Or possibly some sort of blockage! if there is a emergancy vet open you should get her there now!! it could mean her life!!
  6. Your dog most likely has a serious digestive disorder. She cannot digest her food so she has to vomit it up. That's why it is solid. Do not wait until the morning to take her to the vet. I suggest that you IMMEDIATELY take her to an emergency vet clinic open 24-hours-a-day. Best of wishes to you and your dog!
  7. A patient of mine had the exact thing happen to his Shepard. The problem was, she was not able to completely get her food all the way down to her stomach. In other words, she had problems with digesting the food offered her. Eventually, she had to be put on a special kind of dog food that was easier for her to digest. I sincerely hope this is not the case with your dog and that it is something relatively easy to diagnose!! Good luck and I hope your pet recovers soon!!
  8. If she is vomiting everytime she eats I would get her to a vet ASAP! Like others have said, it could be anything from allergies to a blockage of some kind, but many things it could be are VERY life threatening.
  9. My dog sometimes thows up after eating to fast. If you notice your dog gobbling down the food, try getting one of those bowls with the nobs in the middle of it. That helped my dog a lot. Either that or it's simply a stomach flu... Hope the poor puppy feels better :)
  10. I dont know what it is. But she could just not be chewing her food up good enough.
  11. she could have eaten something that is blocking the food or the valve that opens to let food in to her stomach is going into a spasm when food hits it and she vomits food back up undigested. see vet. right away.
