Dog breeds? ok so i want to get a dog and i was looking up different breeds. for a while i wanted to get a lab because they are so cute but i recently realized that they need a lot of activity and are basically kinda rebelious. i wanted to know if anyone knows of any other breeds that are a little more obidient and "mellow" but still have that cute puppy face.... also i would like one that doesnt shed a lot.. thanks

What's the best way to have an infant and a devoted, attentive, loving dog? Breeds, training and advice? This is basically a theoretical, planning-ahead sort of question. I don't have a spouse, a house and can't get another dog at the moment. But many people on here and elsewhere say that having a dog when you have an infant isn't a good idea. I agree, but I also see so many stories about babies growing up with wonderful, protective dogs. If I ever have a kid, I definitely want a dog that is so devoted and so protective of him. The kind you read stories about... shielding the kid from the fall-off of the balcony, protecting the baby from rattlesnakes, that babies learn to walk holding on to... So... if you wanted a dog like this and didn't have a kid yet, what would be your strategy? I realize having a baby and puppy at the same time isn't a good idea. But if you get a dog a year or two before the baby... What breeds would you think are the best choices for infants? What kind of training would you do before the baby came (like, before the baby was even created)? If you're giving suggestions for breeds, I prefer rarer breeds. Just a personal preference, but I'd be more interested in breeds that aren't in the top 10 or even top 20 or 30 maybe. A few breeds I've thought might be a good fit include Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs and American Foxhounds. But I haven't done extensive research. These are just two breeds I've come across in my reading that seem like good fits.

I have been researching ALL kinds of dog breeds since i was young. I live in an appartment now, and also can't afford a dog at this point. But i have been doing research on all kinds of different breeds. My favorites are pit bulls, bulldogs, boxers, bull terriers, boston terriers, mastiffs, and though i have had a few bad experiences with rottweilers, i have met a LOT of nice ones at the vet clinic where i work. Also mixed breed dogs similar to these breeds. I like large short coated dogs who are very friendly, able to be playful and energetic, but also layed back when we are relaxing at home. I have found these dogs to fit my needs and personality. I was just wondering what kind of dog you have and why you chose that dog. I know that dogs are a huge respondibility. I am waiting to get a dog until i own a house, because i want a large dog. And i am also waiting until i have enough money to properly care for a dog.

Why are people so ignorant when it comes to dog breeds? Everytime there is an item on the news about Pit Bulls, dog fighting, et al, the rescue centre has a fresh batch of Staffordshire Bull Terriers dumped on them. They had one dog brought back by a woman who got her dog from a rescue centre as a puppy. When it was 2 years old the vet said it looked like a Staffy cross. Did this woman look up the characteristics of Staffys and see how family orientated they are? Did she think 'we've had her for two years with no problems'? No, she promptly dumped the dog as it was 'dangerous'. If people do their homework before owning a dog (or commenting on Yahoo answers!), and find out a little more about them then these poor dogs wouldn't be turfed out of homes, not because the dog is in any way nasty or dangerous, but because of the ingnorance of the owner. I for one found out everything I could about my chosen breeds before making a decision as to whether it was the breed for me, why can't others do this and save dogs from the pound?
